Asthma in Children

Having a child suffering from symptoms of asthma could be both, fatiguing and disturbing for the parents. Children who develop asthma usually do so in early stages of life (usually up to five years of age). There are certain environmental and natural causes of asthma in children that are

  • Asthma in genes (from either side, maternal or paternal).
  • Infections or allergies.
  • Dwelling in polluted environment.
  • Passive smoking.
  • Birth weight lower than average.

Early diagnosis of these symptoms could be beneficial to the child’s health as the medication and care combined could work in favor for improving the breathing and overall health of asthmatic kid. There are times when parents mistake the regular cough due to dry weather and cold, to be asthma but it is better to keep an eye on the common symptoms of asthma in kids so that medication help could be sought at appropriate time.

Asthma Symptoms in Children

  1. Coughing
  2. Discomfort in breathing
  3. Wheezing sounds
  4. Tightening of chest
  5. Bronchitis

These are the common symptoms prevalent in asthmatic adults as well, but in case of children it is better not to delay medication help or it may worsen in kids with low immunity. Out of these common symptoms, some kids may show one or two only every now and then but may suffer from severe asthma attacks within an interval of few days.
In infants, shortness of breath could be noticed while they are being fed, especially if they are on mother feed, this symptom could be easily noticed. Easily fatigued toddlers who otherwise have enjoyed their playtime would be having a decreased desire to play with children their age or with their toys. Persistent cough is also prevalent in asthmatic toddlers, commonly. In children around 3 to 5 years, asthma could be diagnosed by persistent or recurring cold and infections of the respiratory system that last longer than usual. Cough worsens during sleep time at night and the child finds it difficult to have sound sleep.

How to Manage?

Asthma in children needs to be taken seriously as they are not careful about their own condition worsening and thus may fall prey to an asthma emergency. Taking care of children with asthma could be difficult but it’s imperative to the child’s health.

    1. Ensure a hygienic and pollution free environment to avoid dust and other allergens causing disturbance to the respiratory function of children.
    2. Regular appointments with the medical practitioner should be ensured to stay up to date with the health condition of asthmatic child.
    3. Ensure the child carries inhaler even if the asthma attacks have not occurred in some time. Keeping spare inhalers in different areas of home is also a good option.
    4. Make a chart of asthma triggering food so no one by mistake feeds the child with them and are easy to remember for the child as well.
    5. Inform the asthmatic child’s school about the condition so the sports and activities could be adjusted accordingly.
    6. It is better to avoid smoking altogether, as a parent but if that’s inevitable, do not smoke with children around.
    7. Keep a track of medicines, dosage and refill.
    8. Learn to check the symptoms of different respiratory allergies in asthmatic children.
